When we sketched out this summer’s trip in Big Blue, we under-planned. Expecting to be gone three months, we made reservations for only three nights. I love being spontaneous, but I wanted to be sure we were somewhere lovely over our 40th wedding anniversary.
By our calculations we’d land in Idaho by early August, so I found a lodge in the Sun Valley area. Of the 100 nights we anticipated being gone, those 2 nights were the only ones we “knew” where we would be.
But travel rarely goes as planned. During June the temperatures ran high so we dallied in the cooler areas of Montana. In July when even Montana ran hot, we ventured north into Canada. Only to run into wildfire smoke, which pushed us back across the border. At some point we realized we weren’t likely to make it to Idaho so we cancelled our reservations.
Instead we ended up in (drum roll) Minnesota! Of course this is perfect for us. If you read my memoir RUINED, you might recall that Doug and I met and married in Minnesota. We moved out of the state in 1990 and have only been back for the briefest of visits. It’s nice to be here again.
If you’re a married person, how and where do you celebrate your anniversary?
Is it a big deal to you, or not so much?
What’s been your favorite year/celebration?
Tell me in the comments!
The picture is from last night. Check out those funky earrings — I bought them in a thrift store in Arlee, Montana. You never know what you’ll find on the road.
Hi Ruth
Congrats on your 40th anniversary! We just celebrated our 40th two weeks ago. We rented a cabin in Parksville on Vancouver island (east side of the island) near Rathtrevor beach. Both daughters and their families were there as well. It was a good time.
Happy Anniversary, Ruth and Doug! We celebrated our 40th anniversary a couple of years ago and went away to Birmingham (that's the UK city!). Maybe an unusual choice, but we have a favourite place to stay there, it is a lovely city (including a gorgeous library) and Birmingham has one of our favourite restaurants, called Dishoom, which does amazing Indian street food style dishes.
